Vauxhall has confirmed the engine range for its new Astra ahead of the car’s official unveiling at the Frankfurt motor show next month.

All engines in the revised line-up offer a reduction in CO2 emissions compared with their equivalent models in the current Astra. In total, the eight-engine range will cut CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by around 10 per cent across the range.

A new 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine joins the range from launch; it produces 138bhp and 147lb ft of torque. The engine replaces the old 1.8-litre petrol unit and it offers the same amount of power, 15 per cent more torque and lower CO2 emissions.

The other petrol units offered are a 1.4 and two 1.6s, one of which is turbocharged.

Three diesel engines will be available – a 1.3, a 1.7 and a 2.0-litre – and all feature common-rail fuel injection.

All Astra engines are Euro 5 compliant and a fuel-efficient Ecoflex model will be added to the range in due course.
