Toyota Prius Japan's top seller

04 June 2009

The Toyota Prius has become the best-selling car in Japan for May, clinching the top spot at the first opportunity.

Honda’s new Insight hybrid fell to third place, as its Fit supermini, the Japanese version of the Jazz, moved into second.

The revamped Prius went on sale in Japan last month and Toyota sold 10,915 units in that period, according to data released by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.

A government tax break for environmentally friendly cars began in April to promote the use of green technology, helping sales.

"People who had been interested in hybrid cars but could not afford them are now beginning to buy them as they were encouraged by a new tax break program," said JADA official Toshiki Miyake.
