Toyota: 'no UK closures'

26 August 2009

Toyota has denied reports it plans to halt production on one of its lines at its Burnaston plant in Derbyshire.

Reports from Japan claimed the UK could follow the lead one of Toyota’s plants in Japan, which has shut one of its production lines for the next 18 months to cut costs.

But a Toyota source told Autocar that there were no plans to close any production lines at Burnaston and the reports had been lost in translation.

“There are no plans to close any production lines in the UK and this is highly unlikely to change in the future,” said the source.

Toyota employs around 4000 people in the UK, including those at Burnaston, and it builds Auris and Avensis models at the Derbyshire plant.

“We’ve only recently started building the latest Avensis at Burnaston and there are plans to extend next year when we start building the Auris hybrid there,” said the source.
