Subaru is now putting the finishing touches to the Exiga, the Impreza-based, three-row minivan which could launch in Japan as early as next month, sources say.

Subaru showed a close to production-ready Exiga concept at the last Tokyo Show, but while it's believed the project (codenamed YS4) is now ready to go, there are still conflicting reports in Japan over whether or not Subaru will call the car Exiga.

The car could also be delayed as Subaru works in some Toyota-suggested design changes, to bring the manufacturing cost down. Toyota, the biggest shareholder in FHI, Subaru's parent company, is gradually wielding more and more influence on Subaru.

Underneath, 2.0-2.5-litre flat-four engines, transmissions, platform and of course Subaru's trademark Symmetrical 4WD are lifted from the Impreza/Forester parts bin.

Subaru sees a niche between the two row Forester and three-row Legacy/Outback for this six/seven seater minivan. Any Euro/UK launch for the car would be at least 18 months away, and it would have to be available with Subaru's exceptional boxer diesel.
