Smart confirms Fortwo ED plans

Smart has confirmed production of the all-electric Fortwo will begin in mid-November.

Production will take place at Smart’s Hambach factory in France and the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive will make use of lithium-ion battery technology.

Its 14kw battery has been provided by Tesla as part of parent company Daimler’s tie-up with the electric sports car maker. The battery powers a rear-mounted 30kw electric motor, which produces 89lb ft of torque.

Its top speed is limited to 62mph as it has been intended for use in the city.

Smart has said it will initially be leased in major cities in Europe and the US, although London has not been named.

Trials will begin in Berlin and it will go into full mass production in 2012
