Seat is installing the small-capacity, 1.4-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine into its family hatchback, the five-door Leon.
The engine, which has been a popular choice in the VW Golf, produces 123bhp at 5600rpm and 147lb ft of torque; that’s enough to propel the Leon from 0-62mph in 9.8sec.
This equals an improvement of 22bhp and cuts almost two seconds off the 0-62mph time over the normally aspirated 1.6-litre Leon, previously the smallest engine in the range.
The 1.4 TSI also beats the 1.6 for economy and emissions, with claimed figures of 44.1mpg combined economy and 155g/km of CO2 compared with 37.2mpg and 180g/km for the bigger engine.
Priced from £13,755 in 'Reference Sport' trim, the new model comes in at more than £1000 less than its Golf equivalent, but £1000 more than the entry-level 1.6 Leon. It is available to order now.
