New Twingo arrives – and UK will get it

06 March 2007

Renault has just unveiled the all-new Twingo city car at the Geneva motor show.

The new city car looks very close to the concept shown at the Paris motor show in September 2006. But rather than being a straight challenger to the Smart Fortwo, Renault wants to sell it in Britain as a small, sporty hatch, possibly even to rival the Mini.

The previous generation of Renault’s diminutive four-seater, which came out in 1993, was a big seller across Europe, but was never sold in the UK.

This time around, thankfully we’ll be getting a special right-hand-drive version of the car, which arrives in the UK in September 2007.

The Twingo looks set to offer supermini refinements in a smaller bodyshell. Features for the trendy urban types at whom the Twingo is aimed include an iPod socket for the standard stereo, Bluetooth connectivity, climate control and more.

There’s a two-engine line-up; the GT, with a 75bhp 1.2-litre unit, and the turbocharged 100bhp 1.2-litre Dynamique version.

Going on Renault's recent form, we're expecting the new Twingo to be good to drive and good value, though it's not being billed as a budget car. UK prices are expected to be around £8500, pitching the Twingo between cars like the Toyota Aygo and the Clio.
