Renault has launched a new entry-level Megane - and it undercuts a basic Ford Focus by more than £1500.

The new Renault Megane Extreme is available with an 85bhp 1.5-litre turbodiesel for £14,950, or with a 99bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine for £13,250.

The two new Renault Megane Extremes undercut the next-cheapest Megane model by £900 pounds, while an equivalent VW Golf, the 101bhp 1.6 S, costs £15, 075, over £1800 more than the petrol-powered Megane Extreme.

Standard equipment includes ESP, a CD/MP3 player and air-conditioning. Alloy wheels are also included, though front fog lamps are not.

Order books for the Renault Megane Extreme open in May, and the car will be in showrooms from June.
