Ruf unveils electric 911

German Porsche modifier Ruf has unveiled the world’s first professionally built electric 911, the eRUF. The prototype replaces the flat six engine with a three-phase motor powered by lithium-ion batteries good for around 455lb ft.
Although not as quick as a petrol-engined 911, Ruf’s engineers reckon the eRUF is still good for a 0-60mph time of under 7.0sec and has a top speed of 160mph. More importantly it’s claimed to have a maximum range of nearly 200 miles.
The motor delivers all of its torque from standstill, so off-the-line acceleration should be sensational. However the car’s performance potential is blunted by the 641kg added by the batteries and the motor – the eRUF weighs in at a not inconsiderable 1910kg, while a conventional Carrera S tips the scales at 1420kg.
The eRUF remains rear wheel drive with the motor and the bulk of the batteries positioned over and behind the car’s rear axle.
The eRUF is still in the development stage, and the firm reckons the car’s performance and range will increase with improvements in battery technology.
