Porsche has confirmed that it is actively considering using smaller, supercharged engines in a bid to lower CO2 emissions.

"There is a clear trend towards downsizing, using smaller engines and supercharging. We will find our own conclusion to downsizing," the company’s sales and marketing boss Klaus Bening told Autocar at the Shanghai motor show.

This admission adds to rumours that the next generation Boxster and Cayman sports cars, due to go on sale in 2012, will have four cylinder engines in their line-ups.

Bening, though, was adamant that even though the Panamera is being launched with a stop-start system and the Cayenne will also be fitted with it in the near future, the system would not be offered on Porsche’s sports cars.

However, Bening also revealed that the company is on track to meet the EU's targets of reducing CO2 emissions by 25 per cent by 2015.

"Cayenne diesel, plus hybrid Cayenne and Panamera mean that we will meet the requirements," he said.
