Autocar reported exclusively in 2007 on the hybrid powertrain being developed for the Cayenne and Panamera GT, and with a year to go until the Panamera's launch, more official details have been released.
The four-door GT will use the same 'full parallel hybrid drive system' as the Cayenne, which means that the hybrid elements fit in alongside the standard combustion unit.
These elements include a 34kw motor and high-strength clutch, which also replace the starter motor and alternator, and a battery unit that will be in the boot. Crucially, the car can be powered entirely by electricity or petrol.
As yet there are no official details on the other engines due to go into the Panamera GT, but don't expect the hybrid until the next decade; the electric Cayenne will be the first car to go on sale with the new technology in 2010.
