Porsche cancels Magna contract

Porsche has cancelled a contract with production specialist Magna that would have seen the third-generation Boxster and its Cayman coupe sibling assembled alongside the Aston Martin Rapide and upcoming Mini Countryman in Graz, Austria from 2012 onwards.
In one of the first real signs of consolidation since the financially embattled German sports car maker was brought into the Volkswagen fold in early December, Porsche is now expected to announce the new Boxster and Cayman will be assembled at Karmann, which was saved from near-certain extinction by Volkswagen following the start of bankruptcy proceedings in late November.
Although Volkswagen has not officially revealed what plans it has for Karmann, Wolfsburg officials contacted by Autocar on Monday say it is likely that the revived Golf cabriolet - due in 2011 - will be the first car to hail from the soft-top specialist’s production lines in Osnabruck, Germany.
“It is also likely that the future Porsche Boxster could be added to Karmann’s books,” one Volkswagen official revealed, adding, “At this stage nothing is concrete.”
