Nissan Micra production rose 40 per cent last month, as sales soared under the scrappage scheme.

Around 11,000 Micras rolled off the production line according to Nissan, with 10,445 cars being sold across Europe. That represents a four per cent rise year on year.

Nissan has also announced that Qashqai sales were up 15 per cent year on year last month - although it has not released sales figures.

Trevor Mann, senior vice-president of manufacturing at Nissan Europe, said, “The scrappage incentives have brought sales that wouldn’t normally have been generated, with Micra proving one of the most popular.

“The schemes have stimulated the market and allowed us to protect jobs at the plant and in the dealer network.

“The boost to production has been very welcome but we need to remain cautious as scrappage incentives are scheduled to come to an end shortly.

“We will continue to monitor the market and adjust our production plan accordingly.”
