EU wants unified electric car regs
17 June 2010
An European Union executive has proposed new safety standards for electric vehicles.
The document advised the EU to follow standards laid out by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.
Suggestions include ways of protecting occupants from electric shocks and dangerous gases, plus the introduction of minimum levels of insulation and standardised safety labelling.
The EU made the proposals in a bid to make electric cars safer for the consumer, and in order to increase uptake of the vehicles.
The document suggested standardised legislation between EU countries would also mean manufacturers would only have to meet one set of standards for their electric vehicles, rather than specific rules for each EU country.
