Mitsubishi iMIEV begins UK trials

19 January 2009

European trials of the Mitsubishi iMIEV, Mitsubishi’s electric version of the i city car, will begin this month, the company has announced.

Only 12 Mitsubishi iMIEVs will enter service in Europe for the trial.

The UK will get five cars initially, with the rest being divided between Holland, Norway and Spain.

Users will include government departments, utility companies and company car fleets.

The Mitsubishi iMIEV goes on sale in Japan this summer, and Mitsubishi plans to sell the car in Europe next year. If the yen exchange rate remains as it is, however, the car could end up being very expensive.

Mitsubishi's British importer buys the i and the Evo X direct from Japan, and the recent rise on the yen means these cars now cost Mitsubishi considerably more than they did a year ago. The Mitsubishi iMIEV is also bought direct from Japan.
