New Lancer aimed at European mainstream

11 December 2006

The Mitsubishi Lancer is no longer a just a fringe-appeal fast four-wheel drive saloon. Mitsubishi has today unveiled the new Lancer, the car it hopes can make inroads into the European family car market, to be priced to provide an affordable and bold alternative to more conservative mainstream C-segment offerings like the Ford Focus and VW Golf.

Based on the marque’s flexible ‘Project Global’ architecture that also underpins the Outlander crossover, the new Lancer’s shark-like nose and deep-set headlights can be traced to the Concept-X unveiled in 2005. To be launched in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2007, the Lancer’s UK debut is likely to be delayed to coincide with the launch of the Evo X in the first quarter of 2008.

It will be offered with five engine options, including the VW-supplied 2.0-litre common-rail diesel already fitted to the Grandis Di-D and Outlander Di-D.

More news on the car is expected to emerge after the Detroit motor show next month.
