Mazda is set to launch an updated RX-8 at September’s Frankfurt motor show.

According to reports from Germany, the RX-8’s changes will mainly be cosmetic, with new LED rear lights, a redesigned interior and some aerodynamic tweaks.

New front and rear spoilers, side skirts and a redesigned front end will be added to the RX-8, and it will get new dark grey 19-inch alloy wheels and larger exhaust pipes.

The updated rear-wheel-drive Mazda RX-8 will keep its 228bhp, 156lb ft rotary engine, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Its top speed will be unchanged, at 142mph.

Other standard kit should include a limited-slip differential, stability and traction control and ABS.

Inside, there will be black cloth and leather Recaro sports seats, a new instrument cluster and a three-spoke steering wheel with red stitching. A nine-speaker Bose audio system and Bluetooth will also be included.

Pricing is expected to be similar to the £24,478 of the current model. A Mazda spokesman told Autocar he wasn’t aware of any plans to replace the RX-8 in the immediate future.
