Mazda has launched a facelifted CX-7 at the Frankfurt motor show.

The new model ditches the fast but thirsty 2.3-litre petrol engine in favour of a more frugal 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine. The Euro 5-compliant unit helps improve the CX-7’s CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, although Mazda hasn’t released any official figures.

Styling changes include the addition of the Mazda’s new 'family face', seen on the Mazda 6 and Mazda 3, with a redesigned bumper, front grille and lights. The front grille, foglights and side skirts all get chrome piping.

The crossover SUV will be the first European Mazda to get the Japanese firm’s Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, which cuts NOx emissions by 40 per cent.

The car will be launched alongside a facelifted RX-8 for the German market and the Mazda MX-5 Superlight concept at Frankfurt.
