The sharp-looking and sharp-driving new Mazda 2 supermini isn’t going to be especially cheap, but it is going to be well-equipped when it arrives in UK showrooms on 8 September.

There will be three trim levels (TS, TS2 and Sport) and three enginesfrom launch – 74bhp and 85bhp 1.3-litre petrols, and a 103bhp 1.5.

All models including the £8499 74bhp TS get anti-lock brakes with EBD brake assist, remote locking with deadlocks, alarm and immobiliser, and a CD radio with a socket for your MP3 player.

The £9999 85bhp TS2 gets 15-inch alloys, side and curtain airbags, electric mirrors, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and air-con.

Topping the petrol launch range will be the £11,799 Sport. Along with a “full sports styling kit”, it gets 16-inch alloys, stability and traction control, cruise control, fog lights, rain-sensing wipers and auto lights, and climate control.

A 1.4-litre 67bhp diesel will join the line-up a few months later; it’ll be available in either TS or TS2 trim.
