Here are the latest pictures of the Maserati Spyder, back in testing after its development was put on hold to make way for the recently released Ferrari California.

Our spies spotted this Spyder prototype running high-speed laps of the Nuburgring in Germany. Like the California, it’s based on a shortened version of the Maserati GranTurismo platform. It even gets a metal folding roof that’s similar to the new Ferrari’s.

But rather than Ferrari’s new direct injection engine, this Spyder’s powered by the same 399bhp 4.2-litre V8 found under the bonnet of its larger GranTurismo sibling. It also shares the GT’s six-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Sources at iconic styling house Pininfarina, who helped style the Spyder, claim we can expect an imposingly handsome coupe-cabriolet. The Spyder’s front-end is likely to share design cues with the GranTurismo; notably its sharply tapered, aggressive headlights.

Expect the Spyder to be a strict two-seater that’s likely to cost around £75,000 when it goes on sale in the UK late next year.
