Visitors to the London Show have already had a chance to see the new Evora up close, but Lotus’s new mid-engined sportscar is still undergoing a gruelling test programme ahead of its launch next May.

Our spy photographers have snapped this prototype being tested hard at the Nurburgring. With no need for disguise, it also gives us a chance to see what the Evora looks like in a colour other than the white it used on the show stand, with this example looking pretty good in blue.

The Evora uses a 3.5-litre Toyota V6 engine producing 280bhp and should be capable of a top speed of over 170mph. Engineers who have driven the car claim that it is more than a dynamic match for its major price-point rival, the Porsche Cayman. The car has been tested extensively at the Nurburgring, with Lotus conducting its biggest ever pre-launch drive programme to ensure the car can deliver on the claims.

Lotus has also confirmed that a convertible version of the Evora will follow the coupe, and we also know that the car’s ‘versatile vehicle architecture’ will underpin the forthcoming V8-engined Esprit replacement, which will go on sale in 2011.
