The Jaguar XJ's innovative double view sat-nav and video screen may not be legal in the United States, the car's designer has admitted.

But Jaguar's design chief Ian Callum has admitted: "At the moment, it's technically illegal."

US law prohibits cars from carrying entertainment systems in the front, so that drivers cannot be distracted.

However, the Jaguar system does not allow the driver to access the entertainment functions on the move, and the driver cannot see the passenger's screen.

As a result Jaguar is hoping that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will change the law to accomodate its innovation.
