The new-car-loving portion of the internet is buzzing this afternoon after the release of pictures of the new Jaguar XF. Gaydon’s new BMW 5-series rival has all the design hallmarks and advancements of its famous antecedents, Jaguar’s mk.II and the original XJ6.

However, the XF’s evolution, from drawing board to driveway, took it through myriad stages of overhaul and renewal – many of them much less pretty or mould-breaking than the car Jaguar has ended up with – and you can see them all, exclusively, on Autocar.co.uk.

Our gallery is stock full of images of “the ones that didn’t make it;” design sketches that show the earliest ideas for an S-type replacement harboured by Ian Callum’s team; early proposals that threatened to take the car down a much more traditional, conservative route; and full size clays in which you can see the shape of the finished XF emerging. See them all by clicking here.

“Jaguar’s design has effectively taken a 30-year jump with this car, “ explains Autocar’s Steve Cropley, “but taking a leap requires a run up. On the way, Jaguar built more than 30 full-size models of the XF, all different.”
