The petrol range will comprise of two 1.25-litre units producing 59bhp and 81bhp. There will also be a 95bhp 1.4 and a 118bhp 1.6, which will be the ‘hot’ motor, for now at least.

Oil-burning options are a 1.4-litre unit with 67bhp and an 89bhp 1.6-litre that comes in two states of tune, regular and Econetic. The latter model dips beneath 100g/km.

Trim levels start at the £7695 three-door-only Studio which gets basic 14in wheels and manual windows, and rise through Style, Style+, Zetec and Zetec S to the range-topping Titanium.

The majority of sales are expected in Zetec spec, which includes 15in alloys, leather steering wheel, chrome trim and air conditioning.

The top-line Titanium gets a comprehensive spec list that includes air-con, 16in alloy wheels, projector headlamps, leather steering wheel, front fog lamps and trip computer. All of that doesn’t come cheap, though; a 1.6 TDCi Titanium model with five doors costs £13,695, well into Ford Focus pricing.
