Until the Abarth arrives later this year, Fiat is trying to keep hot hatch fans happy with this, the hottest Punto yet. Called the Punto Sporting, it uses a 120bhp version of Fiat's new 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine, and costs from £11,995.

The Abarth, which is expected to make its debut in production form at September's Frankfurt show, will also use the new T-Jet engine, but with the wick turned up to 155 and 180bhp, depending on your preference.

The Sporting gets 17-inch alloys, spoilers and side skirts to give it an aggressive look, but the Abarth will take things even further, with 18-inch alloys and even chunkier styling. An even more extreme four-wheel-drive version of the Punto is also expected.

The Punto Sporting will hit 62mph in 8.9sec and tops out at 121mph, but with average economy of 42.8mpg, six airbags and ESP it's also pretty sensible. We're hoping that the four-wheel-drive 'Puntograle' is anything but.
