This is the new Fiat 500 cabriolet, spotted undisguised for the first time.

The new soft-top Fiat 500, likely to be called Fiat 500C, has a simple roof mechanism to keep production costs low, as first revealed by our spy pics taken last September. As on its Fiat Topolino ancestor, the sardine-tin style folding roof rolls back to sit on top of the parcel shelf.

This allows the boot space to remain unchanged, and the rigid sides mean that changes to the Fiat 500’s sheet metal are kept to a minimum, reducing development costs and helping to maintain torsional rigidity.

The new Fiat 500C will go on sale in late April this year and is expected to cost about £1500 more than its steel-roofed equivalent. This means that a basic 1.2-litre Fiat 500C Pop will cost around £10k.
