Fiat is considering a number of derivatives based on the new Fiat 500 supermini, including an estate and an SUV.

A 148bhp Abarth 500 and a cabriolet are already confirmed for production, and at the new car's launch Fiat revealed that it is investigating the potential for a station wagon and SUV.

The station wagon would compete directly at the new Mini Clubman, which goes on sale later in 2007, although much of the inspiration could also come from the original Fiat 500 SW, the Giardiniera, which also had three doors and an extended rear load bay.

The SUV would use a combination of the station wagon body and the Fiat Panda's four-wheel drive technology.

The main problem with these models would be the engineering required to lengthen the 500's wheelbase without raising production costs too much.

A decision on the 500-based station wagon and SUV can be expected by the end of 2007.
