You are looking at the new Corvette Blue Devil. The 6.2-litre V8 engine powering it will produce around 650bhp and propel the car to 60mph in only 3.5 seconds and then on well past 200mph.

Based on the current 505bhp Z06, those figures have been achieved not only by adding another 150bhp, but by making the car lighter, too. More carbonfibre has been used in the A and B pillars and the roof, which should lower centre of gravity for better handling as well as acceleration.

The Blue Devil will also receive an improved manual gearbox and paddle-shift automatic transmission that will appear first in the revised C6 due to arrive in the UK at the end of this year.

The car is significant to General Motors in a number of ways. Bob Lutz, GM vice-chairman, wanted to stop the Blue Devil from going into production due to the company's need to reduce C02.

However, the production process was so far along that it couldn't be stopped and so the Blue Devil will arrive in the UK, and will be the first GM product to realistically compete with the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini.

It's likely to go on sale in late 2008 for around £85,000, and though the name hasn't been confirmed yet, with that much power per pound it should be a hit no matter what they call it.
