Citroen has announced its most powerful production engine ever, a 240bhp 3.0-litre HDi V6.

The new common-rail diesel unit will be offered in the C5 and C6 later this summer and will cut CO2 emissions by up to 15 per cent and boost fuel economy by up to 17 per cent, compared to the current 208bhp 2.7-litre HDi V6.

Fitted to the C6, Citroen claims the new engine will average 38mpg, up from 32.5mpg on the 2.7-litre unit, and emit 190g/km of CO2, down from 230g/km.

A six-speed automatic gearbox will be mated to the Euro V compliant diesel unit, and a piloted alternator will recover energy during deceleration and braking.
