The model cull at General Motors continues apace, after the struggling US car maker announced late last week that it will be axing four more models from its line-up.

The Chevrolet Cobalt SS sedan, Chevrolet Impala SS, Cadillac STS-V and the Pontiac G6 GXP coupe are all for the chop.

GM officials have said that the decision to discontinue the G6 GXP coupe is nothing to do with the axe falling on the Pontiac brand as a whole in 2010, but rather part of an earlier plan to turn Pontiac into more of a niche brand.

Blog: why the GM model cull isn't as severe as it seems

Production of the front-drive V8 Chevrolet Impala SS and recently introduced turbocharged Chevrolet Cobalt SS sedan will cease due to a lack of demand for the models.

“Demand was pretty light for both models,” Chevrolet spokesman Terry Rhadigan was reported as saying, “and so it was a business decision that we made based on the demand.”

A lack of demand - and the popularity of the well received Cadillac CTS-V - has also led to the demise of the larger Cadillac STS-V: Cadillac has said that it sold more CTS-Vs in the first four months of it going on sale than a whole year’s worth of STS-V sales.
