Cadillac has launched its first hybrid SUV, the Escalade Platinum Hybrid.

Its 6.0-litre V8 engine powers the car alongside General Motors’ two-mode hybrid system, which consists of an electrically variable transmission and a 300-volt nickel hydride battery.

The electric power is created by regenerative braking, and it helps the Escalade Platinum Hybrid achieve a claimed 24mpg.

An auto stop-start mode also features, as well as LED headlights, a Magnetic Ride Control damping system and 22-inch alloy wheels.

Mark McNabb, Cadillac’s North American vice president, said: “The Escalade Platinum Hybrid represents an opportunity for the changing priorities of luxury consumers who want dramatic design and technology combined with fuel efficiency and functionality.”

The Escalade Platinum Hybrid is expected to cost more than the $85,000 (£60,000) base model when it goes on sale in the US. It will only be available by private import in the UK.
