The BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo (GT) will be built, according to the firm’s CEO.
There had been doubt over whether the BMW 3-Series GT would be made due to the global recession, but BMW says the niche model will sit between the 3-Series touring and the new X1.
BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer said: “We haven't cancelled the crossover of the 3-Series, as it is considered a volume builder with which we can earn good money.”

The BMW 3-Series GT is similar in concept to the recently unveiled 5-Series GT. Like the 5-Series GT, the 3-Series GT will feature a raised driving position and a more spacious interior.
The engines are likely to be drawn from the rest of the BMW 3-series range, with a future line-up of turbocharged four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel units mated to standard manual or optional dual-clutch gearboxes.
It should feature the split tailgate seen in the 5-Series GT and Skoda Superb and four-seat and five-seat options are also likely to be offered. Rear-wheel drive will be standard, with four-wheel drive available as an option.
Its direct rival will be the Audi A4 Allroad, which offers a similar driving position and raised ride height. The 3-Series GT will extend BMW’s 3-Series range to five models, where it will join the saloon, coupe, convertible and touring.
