BMW has finally revealed the first official images of its new 3-series coupé - and confirmed that its range will include a twin-turbo petrol engine.

The new car will initially be launched with a 2.5-litre straight-six engine as its base model, alongside a 3.0-litre unit with two small turbochargers, each boosting three cylinders. The engine produces 306bhp and 295lb ft of torque between 1300 and 5000rpm. BMW says the use of two small turbo instead of one larger unit improves throttle response - and that the new engine produces similar power to a V8 but weighs 70kg less.

The base model 325i will hit 62mph in 6.9sec and 153mph, but while the 335i is 1.4sec quicker to 62mph, its top speed is limited to just 2mph more...

The styling of the latest-generation 3-series coupé is a conservative evolution of the old model, although the length of its flanks between the wheels does hint at how the 3-series has 'grown up' with each incarnation. However, BMW still claims 50:50 weight distribution.

UK sales start on September 23. The 325iSE Coupé will cost £28,090, while the twin-turbo 335i SE Coupé will cost at £33,420. But BMW has already confirmed that the coupé will also be available in 330i, 330d, 320i and 320d variants - and then there's the M3...
