How to break down American resistance to diesel engines? Obvious, really, at least in Audi's mind. Show them a 6.0-litre diesel engine with more cylinders, power and torque than some of the most-celebrated 'Detroit Iron' on the planet.
Audi chose Detroit to reveal its worst-kept secret: that it would make the V12 TDI engine – which can push the mighty Q7 soft-roader to a top speed of 155mph, accelerate it from 0-62 mph in just 5.5 seconds, and still returns 23.7mpg on the combined cycle.
No sign yet of when the engine will enter production, though Audi reckons its 3.0-litre TDI V6, using ultra-clean Blue-Tec technology, can make important US progress when launched late next year.
