The Audi A3 is joining its VW Golf sister car and getting a new 1.4-litre TFSI turbo engine to replace the naturally aspirated 1.6.

It's part of trend among car makers that's likely to continue as they struggle to meet proposed new emissions standards.

As in the Golf, the new engine is more efficient in every way than the old 1.6. It’s got another 10bhp (123 in total) and an extra 33lb ft (148 total).

The car’s 0-62mph time drops by over a second to 9.6, but CO2 output is only 154g/km (down from 158) and fuel economy rises to 43.5mpg.

The new engine’s available to order now for October delivery. Prices start at £16,365 for the A3 1.4 TFSI and £16,865 for the A3 Sportback.
