BMW will supply more than 3000 vehicles to the London 2012 Olympic Games

BMW will supply more than 3000 vehicles to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, including 1550 BMW 3-series Efficient Dynamics models, 40 fully electric Minis and 20 BMW 5-series Hybrids.

The German manufacturer, which is the official automotive partner to the games, has revealed vehicles that will be used during event, which runs from 27 July to 12 August. Most vehicles will be given a variety of tasks but certain models have specific roles. The 17 BMW X3s, for example, are towing boats at sailing and rowing events as well as acting as support cars for the Olympic Torch Relay.

Athletes can expect to be ferried around in one of 160 zero-emission 1-Series Active-E vehicles. Other shuttling duties fall on the 720 5-Series models, 20 of which are hybrids. 10 BMW X5s are towing Horse Ambulances at equine events.

One of the 1550 320d Efficient Dynamics will be the official command car for the Torch Relay. Technical Delegates, responsible for approving the grounds that the games are played on, will also use this vehicle.

40 electric Minis will offer transportation between venues and 200 Mini Countrymans offering pre-booked client transport services. BMW is supplying 25 motorcycles to support for the road-based Olympic events, such as cycling, and 400 bicycles are being supplied for coaches to use at water-based events.

LOCOG, which is organising the London games, set a target of an average of 120 g/km of CO2 emissions for the Olympic fleet. BMW has achieved 116g/km.

Olympic Vehicles

Why was it necessary to spend taxpayers money on a fleet of over 3000 Luxuary BMWs

I am sure similar Ford vehicles would of been just as good at a fraction of the cost

and why have we provided All the vehicles

Why have teams from other countries not made arrangements for and paid for their own support vehicles

Im sure its because some crooked officials have received financial kickbacks

Re: BMW's Olympic fleet revealed

Ok, so what happens to all the second hand BMWs after the games then? A market flooded with used BMWs of very uncertain pedigree? That'll do wonders for the resale value - anyone thinking of off loading their BM had better get in quick!

depends whether the vehicles have been purchased or leased

If they have been purchased then More people should be asking firstly Why they needed over 3000 luxuary BMWs.

and as you have they should be asking what happens to the vehicles after the games.

I dare say crooked officials will get first dibs on a cheap luxuary BMW

People should also want to know if the vehicles are sold where the money from the sale will dissapear to. Probably into the back pockets of crooked officials

Surely MG should supply these cars, not the Germans. After all, it's our Olympics. BMW has already stolen MINI!
Agreed, but perhaps not MG. Without doubt it should have been cars that are produced in the UK by British factories. Doesn't have to be the same make either. Its another piece of short sighted UK rubbish

Actually i think it does have to be one manufacturer, if they were going to use all different makes then no one would want to supply any. keep in mind these cars are being "lent" to the games, the LOC are not buying them. The only way the manufactures would have been interested is if all the cars are from one firm. Otherwise whats the point! i dont see the slogun "Jaguar, official supplier to london 2012....along with 8 other manufactures" doing much for them or any other supplier
