The Volkswagen Polo Blue GT, a performance version of the Polo has been unveiled in Geneva

The Volkswagen Polo Blue GT, a performance-orientated version of the Polo has been unveiled at the Geneva motor show. The Blue GT will feature the VW Group’s 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a cylinder deactivation system.

With 138bhp, the Polo Blue GT is claimed hit 62mph in 7.9sec and reach a top speed of 131mph in standard six-speed manual guise – 1.0sec and 11mph slower than the Volkswagen Polo GTI, which runs a 178bhp version of the same engine.

Fitted with Volkswagen’s new ACT cylinder deactivation system, which closes down the middle two cylinders on part throttle loads, combined average consumption is put at 60.1mpg – or 62.7mpg in combination with an optional seven speed dual clutch gearbox.

UK sales have not been officially confirmed, but it is likely the Polo Blue GT will appear in showrooms by the end of the year.

This sounds quite good, modest amount of power and reasonable economy. Plus the polo is a very grown up looking thing (in a good way). 60mpg never ever going to happen in the real world but lets face it even 40-45mpg is still perfectly good for a petrol motor with a reasonable amount of power.

Given the Bluemotion badge on the tailgate, I would suspect the former

Car sounds terrific, but the same cannot be said of the name.

I'll take one without the badge please...
