The facelifted Hyundai i20 produces just 84g/km of CO2 in 1.1 CRDi form

The facelifted Hyundai i20, revealed ahead of the Geneva motor show, has set a new benchmark for CO2 emissions from a car with a conventional powertrain. When powered by the 74bhp, 1.1-litre, three-cylinder diesel engine and equipped with the Korean firm’s Blue Drive tech, the i20 emits 84g/km. That’s 1g/km less than the Rio 1.1 CRDi EcoDynamics unveiled by sister firm Kia last autumn.

The other frugal diesel that will be offered in the i20 range, an 89bhp, 1.4-litre unit, emits 96g/km.

The i20 – which first went on sale in 2009 – adopts Hyundai’s latest fluidic sculpture design language, including the company’s signature hexagonal grille and new headlamp units. The car gets a more contemporary profile for the front and rear bumpers, a new sculpted bonnet and new wheel designs.

In terms of dimensions, the width (1710mm), height (1490mm) and wheelbase (2525mm) of i20 remain the same, while the length has increased by just 55mm (front 30mm, rear 25mm) over its predecessor to 3995mm.

The i20 will come with Hyundai’s five-year Triple Care service package. Further details of the car will be revealed at the Geneva show on Tuesday morning.

Re: Hyundai reveals ultra-frugal i20

I think the i20 has taken this facelift well, it already had the scalloped lines down the side, so it works for me. Wonder if they've been able to add a bit more interest to the interior, which I think is one of this cars weak spots. At present its just a sea of grey plastic.

Impressive for a facelift. But never mind the "more contemporary profile for the bumpers", which I suspect is Hyundai-speak for more front end overhang, what's interesting is that the bonnet is now a clamshell structure which overhangs the front wings. This looks like a very expensive change for any styling benefit, maybe it gives a big improvement in pedestrian safety?

I do hope that the extended nose doesn't mean more likelyhood of the front spoiler hitting the ground - this is already something of a problem with the existing model.

Will be interesting to see what Hyundai does next, since I guess this facelift preceeds an all new model in 2014.

Like the facelift. Looks far better than the old model which always looked a little wrong from the front end in my eyes.

As for the new engines, very impressive but I get the feeling in the real world the 89bhp unit will be far more useable.
