New diesel engine for Mazda5 offers better fuel economy and more power

Mazda has introduced a new diesel engine for its family MPV, the Mazda5.

The new 1.6-litre unit produces 113bhp - 5bhp more than previously - and 199lb ft of torque.

Power is sent through the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, giving the '5 a 0-60mph time of 13.7sec and top speed of 112mph, the company claims.

Features of the new Mazda 5 include a weight reduction of 120kg over its predecessor, stiffer chassis and revised suspension, as well as a cleaner diesel engine, which offers 15 per cent better fuel consumption with a combined fuel economy figure quoted at 54mpg.

Interior options include Bluetooth audio system, 4GB navigation system accessed via a touch screen monitor, USB connectivity, as well as iPod and iPhone compatibility.

Available from £20,650, the Mazda5 diesel is available as a TS2 or Sport model.
