Government scheme offering £5k discount off the price of a new EV goes live across the UK

The government’s Plug-In Car Grant has gone live across the UK, giving motorists up to £5000 off selected models.

Nine cars are currently eligible for the grant, with three (Smart Fortwo electric drive, Mitsubishi i-MiEV and Peugeot iOn) currently on sale. The rest are due to arrive later this year or in early 2012; another round of eligible vehicles will be announced later in the year.

The government hopes that beginning this incentive will confirm the UK’s global lead in providing electric vehicle transport for the future.

Eight locations across the UK are currently setting up a charging infrastructure for motorists to recharge their cars, with more set to follow if the scheme takes off. A total of 15,000 charging points are expected to be built over the next few years.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: “The transition to ultra-low-carbon vehicles is a great opportunity for the UK motor industry. The Plug-In Car Grant will support the delivery of practical, low-carbon vehicles and we will see further progress of new and conventional technologies in the years ahead.”
