Skoda's 2010 sales will be a record high for the Czech manufacturer

Skoda's 2010 sales will be a record high for the Czech manufacturer, it has announced.

This year’s sales have already outstripped those of the entirety of 2009’s.

More than 700,000 cars have been sold between January and November, a rise of 12.3 per cent compared with the entirety of last year. Of these, Skoda UK sold 33,100 vehicles, up 23 per cent when compared to the same period last year.

The company’s success has been attributed to booming sales in China, Russia and India as well as in emerging markets such as Egypt, where figures rose by over 150 per cent.

When compared with last year, November sales have revealed that the company’s Yeti has done best, increasing sales by 75.5 per cent, to 4,500 vehicles, whereas the Octavia Tour took the biggest hit, decreasing by 51.6 per cent to 1800 vehicles.

Skoda sold 684,200 cars last year, its previous best year for sales.

I've always been sceptical about this type of statement. People say 'A Skodas Fabia is a great value Polo', or 'an Octavia is just the same as a Golf or an A3 but much cheaper'

I agree. I recently looked at the Yeti, Octavia, Golf and A3 and there is a clear quality difference between them, particularly with the interior which in the Octavia in particular felt quite cheap and nasty in places. Whether that is enough to justify the price differences is up to the individual and probably also depends on how you're buying it (leasing etc).

As you say some of the Skodas I looked at do lack items of what I would call critical safety equipment, particularly curtain airbags and ESP. By the time those are added on the price difference isn't so great.

And I don't think they are that great value anyway. Airbags?, that'll be extra. Safety? Optional extra.

Nonsense. They all have airbags and plenty of safety features as standard - please point to the current production models that have neither. Standard kit on Skodas is far more generous than on other VW group cars.

Its not nonsense. Its fact. Go see Skoda's website - Octavia - Facts and Figures - Safety - Optional extras are at the bottom - Curtain airbags £290, ESP £375.

Thats just the first example I found. Safety should come as standard, and not depend on how much you can afford to spend on the car. I'm sure you'll agree.

As far as I'm concerned, thats pathetic. Make the car £500 more expensive, don't starve it of life saving equipment.

I've always been sceptical about this type of statement. People say 'A Skodas Fabia is a great value Polo', or 'an Octavia is just the same as a Golf or an A3 but much cheaper', yet then they say 'Skodas are more reliable than a VW or Audi'. Somehow then the cars are the same as VW / Audi, but better? mmmm. Seems to me like they use the price and 'status' of the VAG relatives as justification to buy one, yet consider them somehow more reliable.

And no, I'm not a Skoda hater. The Mrs wanted a Yeti - thats when we discovered the waiting list.
