What to look out for at China's premier motor show

The Beijing motor show gets underway this Friday, with concept cars from BMW, Mercedes and MG expected to take centre stage.

While there are no details on the BMW concept yet, Mercedes has already captured pre-show headlines by releasing details of its Shooting Break concept, which previews an estate version of the new CLS.

It will be joined in the limelight by other new models by European manufacturers, including the first public outing for the Ferrari 599 GTO. Ironically, Ferrari is expected to announce the car's price at the show - and the fact that all 599 examples have already sold out.

Other major launches to look out for include the unveiling of the Chevrolet Volt MPV concept, an all-new Ford concept, the new VW Phaeton, the facelifted Maybach range, the official release of the Porsche Panamera V6 and long wheelbase versions of the Audi A8 and BMW 5-series.

MG will be the focus of European interest in the Chinese car makers, with rumours of an unveiling of the ZP11 concept car - essentially the production version of the MG3 - rife. Reports suggest it may also be preparing to unveil a more radical concept.

The show also represents an opportunity for Great Wall Motors to show off its latest cars, some of which are believed to be under evaluation for sale in the UK from next year, when it will become the first Chinese car maker to sell cars in the UK as part of an import deal with the IM Group.

We'll also be taking the chance to bring Autocar readers up to date with the latest cars on sale in China, plus some of the wackier concept cars that are part of any Chinese show.
