Alfa Romeo will return to the US in 2012, according to Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne.

Fiat is currently undertaking a review of Alfa’s future, which is set to be completed by April. A US return is a positive sign that Fiat will continue to fund and develop future Alfa products.

“I'm a lot more confident now that Alfa Romeo will reconstitute a product offering that is acceptable globally, and more in particular in the United States and Canada,” said Marchionne.

“There is a strong likelihood that the brand will be back here within the next 24 months.”

Alfa Romeo will be sharing platforms with Chrysler models, both in the US and Europe. Fiat’s new Compact C-segment platform, which will first be used on the new Alfa Giulietta, will go on to underpin more than one million cars per year, including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Lancia and Fiat models.

Alfa Romeos were last sold in the US in 1995, before it pulled out of the market after suffering from quality issues. A planned comeback in 2003 as part of Fiat's alliance with General Motors never materialised.
