Around 80 owners and workers descend on Detroit to urge GM to sell Saab

Saab workers have visited General Motors’ Detroit headquarters to urge the US car giant to sell its Swedish subsidiary.

Saab faces extinction if GM fails to agree a deal with an interested party by its self-imposed deadline of tomorrow. Around 50 workers and 30 Saab owners braved the wintery conditions in Detroit yesterday to voice their feelings to GM.

Some 3400 Saab employees face losing their jobs should the firm be wound down, while 1100 worldwide dealers would be forced to find new franchises.

Dutch sports car manufacturer Spyker is the only known bidder for Saab. The Swedish government has said it will meet with GM next week to establish the firm's intentions for Saab.

Re: Saab workers urge GM sale

I have to say I have always liked the quirkiness of SAAB and oneday hope to run one. In my view it would be a tradegy if GM let this brand die. Hopefully things will be resolved and SAAB can move onto to bigger and better things.

Indeed, there are more encouraging noises coming out of Detroit as apparently Spyker have dealt with the remaining jarring issue of Russian financing by removing it from their bid due in Thursday.

Saabsunited.com is indeed the central repository of all things Saab at the moment - SAVE SAAB, (please GM). Give someone else a chance to reinvigorate this charming brand and develop truly special cars that will not steal any sales from GM, but will give us a choice rather than the default 3/A4/C brigade.

Re: Saab workers urge GM sale

I know 80 people doesn't sound to many but to put into perspective, can you guess how many people turned up when GM closed Pontiac and Saturn? The 2 companies together sold nearly 3 times the amount of SAAB pa so you would have expected at least 200 people to stand up to the big giant and stand behind their brands wouldn't you.

Well the answer is ZERO. that's right a big fat zero and if Renault, Peugeot, Toyota, Nissan and many other companies were in the same situation as SAAB right now, my guess is that none of their owners would show any support for their beloved brand.

Protests will be also held in the Netherlands and in England this month. If you want to find out more please visit www.saabsunited.com

That's not a plug for the website that I have nothing to do with. It's just a great SAAB site run by an enthusiast based in Tasmania of all places.
Maybe if SAAB do end up under Spyker's wings, some of you might want to test drive one when shopping for you next vehicle. You never know, you might even like it?
