Prima concept could make production by 2011, and come to Europe

Tata Motors has unveiled a Focus-sized, Pininfarina-designed four-door luxury saloon concept called Prima, believed to be earmarked for production within two years.

Chairman Ratan Tata believes the model, the most stylish Tata model yet, can begin to change his company’s image as a builder of low-cost, low-specification cars, and help to improve the reputation of Indian cars as a whole.

The Prima, which has a comparatively long wheelbase (2700mm) and a big boot and rear cabin - all key requirements of the Indian market - also meets all current European safety legislation, and could eventually come here.

It could even be made at Pininfarina itself, a company in which Tata has a minority interest. The Prima uses an extended platform from Tata’s Indigo saloon, plus powertrains supplied by Fiat, Tata’s main European partner.
