Chinese car maker Geely, which is currently the preferred bidder for Volvo, has admitted it has also talked to General Motors about buying Saab.

Geely Auto executive director Lawrence Ang told Automotive News that the "battered" US and European economy had resulted in buying opportunities for the Chinese car maker, and that engines and component suppliers are in the frame.

When asked whether Geely would reopen negotiations with General Motors for Saab, Ang replied, "Who knows?"

Merging Volvo and Saab has often been floated as a way of consolidating the struggling Swedish car industry, but few industry analysts think that merging two such strongly individual businesses would be a feasible move.
