Mitsubishi will launch this new compact SUV in Europe next summer, giving the firm a rival for the Nissan Qashqai and Hyundai ix35.

Called RVR, it’s described as a “compact crossover” by Mitsubishi and will be launched in Japan next spring.

First seen as the cX concept last year, the RVR is much more conventional looking than the concept car, although the overall proportions and size are very similar, and it retains some of the concept’s detailing, such as the sharp crease running from the front wings into the rear doors.

Like the cX, the RVR is a five-door hatch, and at 4300mm long it’s slightly shorter than a Qashqai or a Focus. It’s based on the same platform as the Lancer, and should be available with four-wheel drive. Mitsubishi has said the car will come with a new 1.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, but expect a diesel option for Europe.

The RVR is part of the firm’s plan to move away from the image of a manufacturer of big SUVs as it repositions itself as a maker of smaller, more efficient cars.
