Chinese electric car launched

Chinese car maker Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation has unveiled its first self-developed electric vehicle, claiming it has a 120-mile range, a 0-62mph time of 15.0sec and a top speed of 100mph.

The plug-in car, codenamed the BE701, will be build at a new facility just outside Beijing, which has the capacity to build 50,000 electric vehicles and 100,000 hybrid models a year.

BAIC has forecast it will sell 20,000 to 40,000 vehicles a year starting in 2011, but has not said when the BE701 will go on sale.

No images of the BE701 have been released.
