Superformance's latest classic recreation is Corvette's classic 1960s racer

Superformance has launched its recreation of the classic Corvette Grand Sport.

The American restorers have previously recreated versions of the Ford GT40 and the Cobra Daytona Coupe, which have both been tested by Autocar. The firm has agreed a licensing agreement with General Motors to use the Grand Sport's original moulds to ensure the car is authentic as possible.

Although old-fashioned on the outside, Superformance has fitted modern mechanicals under the skin to bring the classic racer into the 21st century.

Only five original Grand Sports were made and all five are believed to still be in existence. Superformance has already created a racing version for the US, but from next year it will launch road-going coupe and roadster examples.

Each example ordered will be custom-built at Superformance's Southern-Californian plant. Customers can choose almost any engine from GM’s current range to be included in the car.

The Superformance Corvette Grand Sport is available to order now, with the first cars expected to be completed by mid-2010.
