Silverstone has launched a new young driver initiative, designed to make teenagers safer drivers before they start taking official on-the-road lessons.

Rookie Drive is available for those aged 13 and above. In the two-hour-long course they will be able to familiarise themselves with the controls of a car for the first time.

Fully qualified driving instructors will give the students lessons in a dual-control Renault Clio 200 Cup. The young drivers will be taught clutch control, correct gearchanges, pulling away and navigating obstacles.

Richard Phillips, Silverstone’s managing director, said: “Rookie Drive will show teenagers how to be safe when starting out as a learner driver and it will give them a head start, as well as being a fun experience.

“We are always keen to encourage and support safe driving on the roads.”

In the run-up to Christmas, Silverstone is offering special Rookie Drive vouchers for £45.

Autocar and the AA have recently launched a joint Drive Better campaign, designed to improve standards on Britain’s roads. Part of this includes calling for changes to the driving test, to ensure drivers have more experience before driving on public roads.
